History 500 Final Paper Outline

History 500 Final Paper Outline

Just spent a few hours hanging out at the Graduate & Law School Commons at USD (picture of me there a few weeks ago). After reading some articles again and taking the advice from my professor of changing my paper topic I have come up with a general outline for my final paper. I am basing most of my essay on two sources: the book Manliness & Civilization, by Gail Bederman, and the chapter “Davy Crockett as a Trickster: Pornography, Liminality, and Symbolic Inversion in Victorian America,” from the book Disorderly Conduct, by Carroll Smith Rosenberg. Below is my final essay outline:

  1. Question
    • Why did White Anglo-Saxon Protestant (WASP) men of the 19th and early 20th century America embrace the mythical frontier man image?
  2. Who was the frontier man?
    • Description of the mythological frontier hero
  3. Ways to Examine the embrace of the frontier man
    • Industrialization
    • Rise of blacks and immigrants in America
    • Rise of women in America
    • Non-fiction frontier men and their fictionalization
  4. How the authors examined the embrace of the frontier man
    • Bederman – a way to be manly
    • Smith-Rosenberg – a way to escape
  5. Conclusion
    • I agree with Smith-Rosenberg

Next up will be writing a full outline and then writing the paper hopefully by Monday and then a final draft on Thursday to be turned in on Friday. Go Chargers!
